Luau Birthday Party
For my daughter’s 10th birthday party, she decided she wanted a Luau. Considering we are on the East Coast, we are far from any Islands. Our menu consisted of kid friendly frozen drinks and appetizers. We also renamed some of the items – grilled chicken became “Aloha Grilled Chicken” and mini burgers became “Surfer Sliders”. Since my son has allergies, I made the cake. Using cookies as “deck” material, fondant for surfboards, and crushed graham crackers as sand on the beach. My daughter and I agreed on the menu and we got colorful tropical paper goods. We even looked up each girl’s name and translated it to Hawaiian to make nametags. Fruit cocktail was served in martini glasses with flower toothpicks. I found coconut cups which we filled with candy for the girls to take home. Our activity was two-fold – sand art in a bottle and then making “tie – dye” t-shirts with sharpie markers and rubbing alcohol.
Thank goodness it was a nice day out so we were able to set up tables in our garage for the activities so the mess wouldn’t be in our house. The girls enjoyed putting the colorful sand in the bottles with little funnels. I found t-shirts on sale at http://www.oldnavy.com. The girls (and my son), drew with Sharpie markers on the shirts, then took droppers filled with alcohol and watched the magic happen. Another fun birthday in the book. A special party for my girl’s special birthday – turning double digits!
